Virginia Vulva Takes Washington
By Dr. Kylee 4/18/2024
“Mommy, why are you wearing a pink hot dog costume?!” My 8-year-old exclaimed via Facetime. Oh, the curiosity of youth! Little did he know, there’s much to teach him yet…
Yes, that’s me! Strolling around Washington D.C. in a vulva costume. Now, why, you might wonder, would I subject myself to such an eccentric outfit? Well, let me tell you—it’s all for a cause!
This week presented me with a remarkable opportunity, and dare I say, a responsibility, to advocate for pelvic health physical therapy at the Capitol. Picture this: me, traversing 7 miles around the Washington monuments in a full-on VULVA costume, capturing attention, fielding questions, and undoubtedly turning heads. The following day, I found myself in meetings (sans costume) with Arizona representatives in Congress, delving into matters that profoundly impact both physical therapists and their patients.
Thanks to the unwavering support and sponsorship of the American Physical Therapy Association, I’ve been privileged to participate in PT Day at the Capitol for the past two years. And let me tell you, I’m eager to continue championing these critical causes in the future. In our discussions with congresspeople, we tackled pressing issues such as Medicare reimbursement—severely diminished in comparison to inflation, especially concerning physical therapists—telehealth, which faces an uncertain fate for PTs post this year unless new legislation intervenes, and the imperative of pelvic health for postpartum individuals.
I couldn’t be prouder to be part of these crucial conversations, all while donning the persona of “Virginia Vulva”. It’s an unconventional approach, to be sure, but sometimes making a bold statement is exactly what’s needed to garner attention and drive change.
